CHARACTER BACKGROUND - IF YOU WANT A LINK LET ME KNOW

Alan Kahn was the son of a prosperous, middle class Jewish family in Philadelphia. Despite his grandfather's best efforts, Alan's wasn't a religious family. They had immigrated from the German states, to avoid persecution for a religion that most of them did not actively practice. The Kahns had a vague idea that a deity may be out there, but they figured that it had long since lost interest in the doings of man. They were firm believers in the Enlightenment and the rights of the individual man. This included that man's right to eat pork and work on Saturday. Alan was raised with a stong work ethic and a growing Ideal. This Ideal was that no man was subject to another, unless he willingly gave over his loyalty. Laws and taxation were to be determined by the people, not some distant government interested only in its own preservation. People should be allowed to do as they pleased, so long as it wasn't harmful to other people.

Alan never liked the city life. He loved the open spaces and seeing what was over the next hill. As soon as he was able, Alan struck out into the wilderness to make his own living. He learned hunting and trapping from the Iriquois and Charokee, as well as their tongues. Alan made friends with some of the remaining French colonists and learned markmenship from their woodsmen. To him, this was the ideal life. He could live where he pleased, do what he pleased and meet interesting people along the way.

When the rumblings of Revolution began to sweep through the Colonies, Alan signed up. Before a shot was ever fired, Alan was running messages, recruiting men, and training malitias. He learned that he had a knack for leadership. Which was something that had never occured to the loner before. Men listened to his words and followed his example. When the actual fighting began, Alan found himself in command of a group of irregulars. They were masters of the hit and fade. The British never saw them coming and rarely lived to tell the tale. Alan is still grateful to the French for helping in the war. Without the French, America would not exist today.

Once the war was over, he found himself recieving the attention of a very odd man. To this day, Alan can't remember the man's name. All that's clear in Alan's mind was that the man was English and aristocratic. The man was the one that made Alan a Kindred, specifically a Ventrue Kindred. Alan remembers slipping away into the woods, because the man wanted to use Alan to gain power over the new American nation. Alan didn't believe in British oppression, so why would he believe in British Kindred oppression?

Alan quickly dissappeared back into his former lifestyle. The only change was that he had to hunt and work at night. He only returned to populated areas long enough to trade. When the new American government showed signs of oppression in the Whiskey Rebellion, he joined with his fellow woodsmen to fight against the whiskey tax. Unfortunately, that battle was lost and Alan retreated back into the woods.

The wilderness was Alan's home. The only problem was shelter. Alan got very used to sharing caves with animals and digging himself holes. This was solved by a very fortunate friendship. He met an old French Gangrel by the name of Pierre Conte. Pierre shared the secret of sheltering in the earth, in exchange for guidance in the ways of the North American native people.

Alan and Pierre remained traveling companions for several years. They both stayed barely ahead of the ongoing American expansion, trapping and hunting as they went. The native people were more open to their odd habits than the white men were, so the two dealt with the natives more than the Americans. On the rare nights that they spent in cities, it was just to trade and catch up on world events. Whenever they encountered other Kindred, it was assumed that the two were Sire and Childe or broodmates. Pierre also taught Alan about the Kindred, their Traditions and politics. Alan learned that his Sire probably was what was called an Invictus. Pierre, himself, wasn't anything. The man didn't care for politics or religion and least of all, creepy Eastern Europeans.

Alan caught wind of a new idea among the Kindred. This new idea went right along with Alan's Ideal, except it was for the living impaired. These Carthians were catching alot of flak in Kindred society. This appealed to Alan's revolutionary senses. He started running messages between Domains, on the sly. Once Alan became political, Pierre decided to take his leave. The older man remained Alan's friend, but wanted no part in politics.

The Westward expansion continued to push Alan out. He still didn't like the direction the American government was going. It was better than Old Europe, but the rich men had corrupted the pure Ideal. Slavery, wether it was of blacks or the working poor, was dirty and the government's tacit support of it was worse. America seemed to be turning into a nation of merchants, rather than explorers. The dollar had become the state religion of America.

Alan found himself eventually in California. He settled in amongst the native people of the Central Valley, going into the Spanish/Mexican settlements only to trade. When a new Kindred moved into the area, by the name of Vektor Drakken, Alan found himself having to negotiate the survival of his native friends. Drakken didn't speak the Yokut's language and the Yokuts didn't speak English. Luckily, Alan spoke both. He made himself a deal with the devil. In exchange for Alan being a translator for the negotiations and not being a rabble rouser, Vektor agreed to leave Alan alone. The old Invictus seemed to find amusement with Alan's Idealism, in the same way that an old man find's the play of children amusing.

Things remained as was for a long time. Alan eventually had to seek out people for food. This was not a pleasant thing for him. The idea of eating people took a long time for Alan to get used to. Feeding from animals had just been an extension of his former love of meat, just in a liquid form. People were his friends and the fact of having to look at his friends as food was alien to a man against oppression. After much soul searching, Alan came to the resolution that he had to do what was needed for his survival. He was what he was, and there was no changing it. The only way out was death, and Alan wasn't interested in dying.

Alan vaguely remembers when Vektor handed things over to Gasquette. He even thinks he knew the old man's resting place at one point. So did Gasquette, which is why Alan was attacked and staked. Gasquette wanted to keep a source of the information alive, but in a harmless form. Alan spent all those years stewing. He wanted nothing more than to kill that crazy little piss bag when the wood came out. Alan's pretty sure that he didn't sprout incorrect memories, but he knows that some of his real ones got real vague. Especially ones involving Ventrue Invictus.

When waking up into a modern world of computers, news on demand and rock n roll; an old mountain man is overwhelmed. Alan's last frame of reference was the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the rise of Fascism in Europe. He knew about cars, planes, and indoor electricity. It was the atomic and information ages that he had to catch up on.

Alan eventually rejoined Kindred society by becoming active in the Modesto Domain. He eventually moved on to Salt Lake City. There he found people extremely open to his ideas. The Ordo Dracul Prince, Iono Tesla, made Alan Master of Elysium shortly after his arrival. Within a few months, the people in power began grilling Alan on his political ideas. They wanted his world view and what his type of government he wanted. This eventually led to Prince Iono stepping down and the Ordo Dracul backing Alan in the election for Prince. Now, a man who hates civilization and cities is Prince in a city containing over a million souls.
